The Corncrake Plate is a very special, exclusive ceramic that's close to our hearts here at Òr. It's thrown on the wheel from smooth, stoneware clay and hand-painted by Edinburgh based maker Celia Wood. The perfect piece for adorning your walls or using as a decorative trinket dish.
Celia transformed our vision for the Corncrake Plate into a unique piece which was inspired by our desire to spread awareness about these endangered birds on Skye. To help increase their numbers, we spoke to local resident Shelagh from RSPB Scotland about her Corncrake Calling project and agreed to ensure that 30% of every plate sale goes towards her crucial work.
When creating the initial designs for the plate we wanted to capture the likeness of these small brown birds with their beaks open, ready to make their characteristic crex crex call. While the border was inspired by nettles and cow parsley, plants found in a corncrake's habitat.
